Shed in Eros Reserve that the club called home from 2007 until 2013
A nearby track that was left from a beach groyne construction in 2005 lead to the beach so vehicle access was good and we placed the shed in a location that would allow it to stay when the clubhouse was eventually built. The groyne had been constructed to reduce beach erosion. A parcel of land adjacent to Eros Reserve known as lot 106 was a lot that had been partly swallowed up by the ocean overtime and it was still privately owned. The land was required for construction of the groyne and later the club building. In 2004 council contacted the elderly owner who had many years of outstanding rates on this unusable lot that was half in the ocean and half in the dunes. The owner agreed to hand the lot back to the state if the outstanding rates were written off. Agreement was reached which allowed construction of a groyne and later the club.
During the lead up to construction of the main club building in 2011 council endeavoured to claim that they had helped with construction of the shed. An article was written by council for the press claiming that they had helped with shed construction and it was provided to me for review. Luckily I stopped it as such incorrect claims would have infuriated me and others, knowing the battle we had experienced to build the shed.
I did not renominate for club president at the end of the 2007 season as 12 months of negotiating with the council to locate our shed on Eros Reserve with no help from SLSWA had worn me down. Our state body had let me down in various other ways. They have an event sanctioning process for clubs wishing to provide help to other organisations for community or sports events, or to conduct carnivals. They had been difficult to deal with during sanctioning. We had helped various local events, sporting carnivals and council when water safety was needed. An annual swim known as the Cambria Island Swim required water safety and I submitted an event application to SLSWA in November 2006 for this event that was to be held in February 2007. I informed the event organisers that I would arrange water safety if the event was sanctioned by SLSWA. Many hours of planning, working with event organisers and risk mitigation are required for such events which I had happily provided. Proper planning and preparation will result in smooth events without incidents. In all the events that I provided water safety for, there were never any unforseen or dangerous incidents.
Our state body provided no feedback after the application for the Cambria Island Swim was submitted. The event organiser required time for an alternate plan if we did not get approval. I had queried our state body numerous times both verbally and in emails for feedback and four days before the event had words with them as the event organiser was very anxious and there was no time to arrange an alternate plan.
